Galectin-3 is an α-galactoside binding lectin mainly present in the cytoplasm, but it can also be present in the nucleus or be secreted. It has a high affinity for polylactosamine glycans and binds to extracellular matrix components and cell surface adhesion molecules. It has been implicated in immune regulation, development, neoplastic transformation, and metastasis.
